BCFA Sunday Junior Cup Heart Ache
9th November - BCFA Sunday Junior Cup (Round 2)
Cherry Tree AFC - 3 Wyken AFC - 3 AET
(Wyken Win 5-4 on pens)
It was a cold, wet and windy day at kennedy in the BCFA Sunday Junior Cup second round as Cherry Tree looked to build on the impressive result from there last run out, even if it was two week earlier.
Cherry Tree started off slowly and really didn't look up for the challenge ahead, & it was clear that Wyken were really up for taking a scalp of a team two leagues higher. It wasn't long before Wyken got there noses in front with a well taken goal, only to see in canceled out by Darren Groves swooping at the far post to head home a Robert Brassington cross. It was more than Cherry Tree deserved and for a few minutes it looked like it may have woken them up...but that soon faded and they were back to making hard work of the conditions and heavy pitch.
Once again Wyken got in front, capitalizing on a defensive mix up there little number 14 producing a sublime finish, with a well placed drive over the helpless Cherry Tree keeper.
Wyken were hanging on for a well deserved win when a typical weaving run from Adam Layfield resulted with him going down in the box with only five minutes left in the game. Penalty! The responsibility to send the tie was the captains and Calivn De-voisey stepped up with a 100% penalty record. He struck it high to the keepers left and as he dived towards the bottom left corner,he some how threw up his right hand to turn the ball around the post. Great save.
As Calvin stood, with head in hands the corner was whipped in,and cleared. The clearance fell to Robert Brassington who struck a thunderbolt into the top right hand corner. Cherry Tree & Calvin were saved there blushes for now as the tie headed into extra time.
Extra time saw a goal for each side with Adam layfield getting yet another equalizer for Cherry Tree and it was to be decided by penalty's.
